The exhibition takes its point of departure in the heterogeneity of cultures that, today present on all continents, have contemporary or historical links to societies on the African continent, and gives voice to this diversity through a series of distinct and disparate themes. The main objectives of the exhibition are:

- To display the diversity, richness, contradictions, ambiguities and dispersion of cultural expressions which are produced on -or in the context of diaspora -have links to - the African continent, in order to counteract prevailing stereotypes about "African Culture" and "African identity".

- To show that contemporary or historical cultural expressions that could be identified as "African", are results of trans-cultural interactions and fusions of diverse cultural elements.

- To display the impact of slavery and colonialism on historical and contemporary African societies and diaspora cultures and – identities.

The African collections of the museum comprise the original base for the exhibition which is strongly object based. More than 800 objects are shown - archaeological, historical, archival as well as contemporary. Visual art as well as music are central and strong components.
