Jeju Haenyeo are women free-divers with a centuries-old tradition of harvesting marine products. They have never used any supplemental breathing equipment. Although the essential part of Haenyeo culture centres around diving, many other cultural aspects are preserved in Haenyeo culture, such as folk rituals and music.

The Hado Haenyeo Choir, founded in 2013, performs at various places at home and abroad. All members are Haenyeo divers, aged 50 to 70 years, who gather to sing in the evening after spending day working at sea. The choir's repertoire consists of songs with lyrics describing the Haenyeo life full of joys and sorrows. They are written by Conductor Seung-chul Baang, who has shared the sweets and bitters of life with the singers since 2015.

Today's event "Meet the Hado Haenyeo Choir at Östasiatiska Museet" will offer you an opportunity to learn more about different aspects of Haenyeo culture through a documentary screening, dialogue with Haenyeo divers and a musical performance.

Welcome to Östasiatiska Museet to meet the Haenyeos from Hado-ri of the Jeju island, Republic of Korea, hear their stories and experience one of the most unique parts of Korean tradition.
