Traces of Congo

The exhibition was shown 17 January 2008 – 17 October 2008

What role did the Nordic countries play in the brutally atrocious exploitation of the Congo at the end of the 19th century? With the help of original objects and artefacts, photographs, films, soundtracks and music the exhibition renders an account of the relations between the Nordic countries and the Congo. About Nordic nationals who actively participated in the colonisation and about Nordic nationals who from an early stage took a stance against, voicing criticism of that terrible chapter in history. The exhibition tells a tale of armies, seafarers, missionaries and buccaneers. What were Nordic nationals doing in the Congo for 130 years? What trail have they left behind?
